red squirrel
As the least densely populated county in England,
Northumberland has lots of room for wildlife. Our
county provides one of the last refuges for the endangered
red squirrel, and they can be easily spotted in our
woods. |

birdlife
We also play host to a wide variety of birdlife including curlew, dunnock, goldcrest and skylark. A great place
for birdspotting is Grindon Lough, 2 miles away, which is a birdlover's paradise.

sheep
And if you like your animals a little more domesticated,
we have a flock of rare Ryeland sheep, one of the
traditional British sheep breeds, as well as donkeys
and ponies.

kielder
A little further afield is Keilder
Water & Forest Park site of England's largest
man-made lake and home to 50% of England's red squirrel
population as well as deer and many rare bird species.
A specially built observatory with wheelchair access
offers a great chance to view wildlife in its natural
habitat.
